Pressure Wash Your Fence For A Clean Slate

If you're on the fence about using a pressure washer, read this blog! Power washing your fence or home is easier than you thought.

The best time to wash your fence is in the morning or evening when it won't be in direct sunlight (and you won't get too hot!). You can use a power washer to clean off dirt, mud, cobwebs, stains, bird droppings, etc., and have your fence looking prettier than ever.

Safety

The first thing to remember is to use caution while operating a power washer. It's important to know where all the controls are beforehand in case you need to quickly turn off the pressure, or immediately release pressure from the system.

Be sure to remove obstacles before starting. Sweep away debris and tape over anything in the area that shouldn't get wet.

There's a chance you can spray something in your own eyes, so wear goggles or plastic glasses just in case.

Use good judgment when washing; i.e. don't point the sprayer at animals, plants, or your family.

Applying the Cleaner

  1. Use a wood cleaner that is specified for a power washer and apply using a low-pressure soap nozzle.
  2. Use a small utility brush to scrub the solution in small corners.
  3. Apply the cleaner from bottom to top, sweeping across a few panels at a time.
  4. For dirty or stained spots, use a rotating scrub brush attachment.
  5. Don't let the detergent dry completely!

Spraying Off the Cleaner

  1. Work with the grain of the wood, not against it.
  2. Start at the top and go down to prevent streaking.
  3. Let the fence dry for 48 hours, then apply a sealer.

Finishing Up

  1. Flush the area around the fence with clear water to dilute the detergent residue
  2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning the washer and releasing the pressure.
